Duane โKeffe Dโ Davis, the former gang leader convicted of orchestrating the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison, bringing a major development in one of hip-hopโs most enduring murder cases.
The 63-year-old was sentenced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, by a Las Vegas court after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in August. The sentence comes nearly three decades after Shakur was shot in a drive-by attack near the Las Vegas Strip.
According to Reuters, Davis received consecutive sentences of 20 years to life for murder and an additional 20 years to life for using a deadly weapon. He has maintained that he plans to appeal the conviction.
What Happened to Tupac Shakur?
Tupac was shot on September 7, 1996, while riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight. The attack followed an altercation earlier that evening at the MGM Grand hotel, where Tupac and members of his entourage confronted Orlando Anderson, Davisโs nephew.
Prosecutors argued that Davis helped organise the shooting as retaliation for the confrontation. According to the prosecutionโs case, Davis was in the white Cadillac from which the shots were fired and supplied a firearm to men in the vehicle. Tupac was struck multiple times and died six days later, aged 25.
Davis was not identified as the person who pulled the trigger. Prosecutors argued that his role in organising the attack and providing the weapon made him criminally responsible for the killing. The jury ultimately found him guilty.
Keffe Dโs Own Words Became Central to the Case
For years, Tupacโs murder remained unsolved. The investigation gained renewed momentum after Davis discussed his alleged involvement in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.
Investigators used his public statements and recorded interviews with authorities as key evidence during the trial. Davisโs defence team challenged the reliability of his accounts, arguing that his stories were exaggerated and that the prosecution lacked physical evidence directly connecting him to the shooting.
Despite those arguments, the jury convicted Davis in August 2026. His sentencing now marks a significant legal milestone in the case, although his planned appeal means further proceedings may follow.
Tupacโs Family Speaks at Sentencing
Members of Tupacโs family addressed the court before the sentence was delivered. His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, and brother, Maurice Shakur, spoke about the lasting emotional impact of his death and urged the judge to impose the maximum punishment.
Judge Carli Kierny also addressed Davis directly, saying that taking a personโs life meant taking away their future and their place within their family. Her remarks reflected the enduring consequences of the killing for Tupacโs loved ones.
A Landmark Moment in Hip-Hop History
Tupac Shakur remains one of the most influential figures in rap, remembered for songs including โCalifornia Love,โ โDear Mamaโ and โChanges.โ His murder became closely associated with the violent tensions surrounding hip-hop in the 1990s, including the rivalry between artists and circles connected to the East and West Coast rap scenes.
Davisโs conviction and sentence represent a major development in the long-running case. However, the identity of the person who fired the fatal shots has not been established in court, and Davisโs planned appeal means the legal story may not be over.
Nearly 30 years after Tupacโs death, the case continues to hold a significant place in music history and in the search for accountability for one of rapโs most consequential losses.
