The Headies has postponed its 18th edition from October 2026 to April 2027, pushing back its planned Toronto ceremony by nearly six months as organisers expand the programme across Nigeria and Canada.
The awards, originally scheduled for October 23, 2026, will now culminate in Toronto on April 10 and 11, 2027, according to an announcement published by the organisers on October 10. The revised schedule turns the event into a two-day finale, with the Headies Global Trade & Investment Summit also forming part of the wider programme.
The postponement comes less than two weeks before the original Toronto event, which had been expected to bring together nominees, artists, music executives and other industry stakeholders.
Why Has The Headies Been Postponed?
In their announcement, the organisers said the change would allow them to expand activities leading up to the Toronto finale, including engagements in both Nigeria and Canada.
Under the theme โAfrica to the World,โ the expanded programme is intended to combine music recognition with industry networking, creative-sector discussions and business opportunities. Founder Ayo Animashaun said the wider initiative would connect artists and other music professionals with people and organisations capable of supporting the industryโs growth.
The organisers have not announced a more specific reason for moving the main ceremony beyond their stated plan to broaden the programme.
Activities Will Continue in October
Although the main awards ceremony has moved to April, The Headies says activities under its Road to The Headies initiative will continue during the original event period.
Workshops, seminars and other industry engagements are expected to connect nominees, artists and music-industry stakeholders ahead of the rescheduled finale. The organisers said further details, including confirmed schedules, venues and participation information, would be communicated through their official channels.
The awards also apologised to guests who had already made travel plans and other arrangements for Toronto, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the change.
The Headiesโ International Expansion
The 18th edition represents another step in The Headiesโ international expansion. Established in 2006 as the Hip Hop World Awards, the ceremony has grown into a major platform recognising achievements in Nigerian music.
After holding its 15th and 16th editions in Atlanta, Georgia, the awards returned to Nigeria for the 17th edition in 2025. The planned Toronto finale marks its next international move, placing African music and industry professionals in another major North American market.
The expanded April programme will place the awards alongside the Headies Global Trade & Investment Summit, reflecting the organisersโ aim to connect the celebration of African music with wider commercial and investment opportunities.
For now, the key dates for the 18th edition are April 10โ11, 2027, in Toronto. The organisers say the road to the awards will continue in October, with additional information expected through official Headies channels.
