South African Grammy-winning DJ and producer Black Coffee has won a legal battle against luxury carmaker Maserati after a court ruled in his favour in a dispute involving an undelivered luxury vehicle.

The case reportedly centred on a Maserati MC20 Cielo, a high-performance convertible that Black Coffee had ordered but never received. The musician took legal action after the vehicle was allegedly not delivered despite payment arrangements being made.

A court has now ordered Maserati to pay Black Coffee approximately $438,000, bringing the long-running dispute to a close.

The ruling represents a significant victory for the internationally acclaimed South African artist, who pursued the case after the luxury vehicle failed to materialise.

Black Coffee, whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, is one of Africa’s most successful electronic music exports. He became the first South African artist to win a Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album when his 2022 album Subconsciously won at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

Beyond his music career, Black Coffee has developed a global profile through international touring, luxury partnerships and appearances at some of the world’s biggest electronic music events.

The Maserati dispute adds an unusual chapter to his career, with the court ruling highlighting the importance of contractual obligations in high-value luxury purchases.

The approximately $438,000 award is understood to cover the financial losses connected to the failed transaction, although the precise breakdown of the amount depends on the court’s judgment and associated costs.

For Black Coffee, the case ends a dispute that began with what should have been a straightforward luxury-car purchase and ultimately became a significant legal battle.
