In a closely watched trilateral summit on Thursday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa joined European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa to reaffirm what all three leaders described as a rapidly maturing strategic partnership. For the EU, which has been scrambling to diversify away from heavily concentrated mineral supply routes, the agreement offers a vital hedge. Von der Leyen emphasised the scale of the EU\u2019s commitment: \u201cToday we\u2019ve signed three new major projects. We are investing \u20ac350 million to modernise South Africa\u2019s infrastructure, both in transport and energy. This includes support for Transnet\u2019s decarbonisation under the Just Energy Transition Partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n
