The <strong data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"955\">International Energy Agency (IEA)<\/strong> forecasts that regional demand will climb <strong data-start=\"998\" data-end=\"1021\">another 50% by 2035<\/strong>, equivalent to adding the combined electricity use of Germany and Spain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1307\">If current trends persist, meeting that demand could require burning <strong data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1197\">2.8 million barrels of oil<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1237\">500 billion cubic metres of gas<\/strong> annually \u2014 an unsustainable trajectory, according to energy analysts.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1689\">\n<p data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1689\">\u201cThe projection is alarming for North Africa,\u201d warns <strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1386\">Abdelaziz Khlaifat<\/strong>, chair of petroleum and energy engineering at the <strong data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1475\">American University in Cairo (AUC)<\/strong>. \u201cRelying on more gas will divert export earnings, inflate subsidies, and entrench carbon-intensive systems just as global markets are pivoting to renewables. It\u2019s a short-term fix that risks long-term fragility.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"1694\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1741\"><strong data-start=\"1699\" data-end=\"1741\">Rising risks and growing opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"2014\">Natural gas and oil already supply nearly <strong data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1821\">90% of North Africa\u2019s electricity<\/strong>, a share that exposes the region to price shocks and fiscal stress. Yet the IEA\u2019s latest <em data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1932\">Electricity in MENA<\/em> report also highlights the immense potential for a <strong data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2011\">clean-energy transition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2366\">In 2024 alone, the region attracted <strong data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2072\">over $44 billion<\/strong> in renewable-energy investment \u2014 among the highest levels in the developing world \u2014 and that figure is projected to rise by <strong data-start=\"2197\" data-end=\"2219\">nearly 50% by 2035<\/strong>. With some of the planet\u2019s strongest solar irradiation and expanding grid infrastructure, North Africa could emerge as a <strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2365\">renewable powerhouse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2702\">\n<p data-start=\"2370\" data-end=\"2702\">\u201cThis is not a zero-sum game between gas and renewables,\u201d says <strong data-start=\"2433\" data-end=\"2447\">Ali Saffar<\/strong>, head of the IEA\u2019s division for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. \u201cGas will remain part of the mix, but solar is expected to grow from around 5% today to roughly a quarter of total capacity. The goal is diversification, not elimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2704\" data-end=\"2968\">The IEA\u2019s <em data-start=\"2714\" data-end=\"2741\">World Energy Outlook 2024<\/em> underscores that successful transitions in emerging economies hinge on maximizing the efficiency of existing assets \u2014 including gas infrastructure \u2014 while aggressively scaling up renewables and improving transmission networks.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2970\" data-end=\"2973\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2975\" data-end=\"3016\"><strong data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"3016\">Balancing grids and water security<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3017\" data-end=\"3323\">As climate change intensifies, electricity is becoming essential not only for cooling but also for <strong data-start=\"3116\" data-end=\"3136\">water production<\/strong>. Across the MENA region, cooling accounts for as much as <strong data-start=\"3194\" data-end=\"3223\">70% of peak summer demand<\/strong>, while desalination consumes about <strong data-start=\"3259\" data-end=\"3280\">5% of total power<\/strong>, a share expected to <strong data-start=\"3302\" data-end=\"3320\">double by 2040<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3325\" data-end=\"3539\">To meet these dual challenges, countries are increasingly adopting <strong data-start=\"3392\" data-end=\"3411\">reverse osmosis<\/strong> \u2014 a technology powered by electricity rather than fossil fuels \u2014 to replace older, energy-hungry thermal desalination plants.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3541\" data-end=\"3820\">\n<p data-start=\"3543\" data-end=\"3820\">\u201cReverse osmosis is roughly ten times more energy-efficient,\u201d says Saffar. \u201cAnd because it runs purely on electricity, it can be powered by renewables. Since 2018, all new desalination capacity in the region has been electricity-based \u2014 perfectly aligned with solar expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"4108\"><strong data-start=\"3822\" data-end=\"3833\">Morocco<\/strong>, for example, now mandates that new desalination facilities be powered entirely by renewables. The plan to produce <strong data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"3977\">1.7 billion cubic metres<\/strong> of desalinated water annually by 2030 \u2014 with clean energy at its core \u2014 is seen as a model for integrated water-energy management.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4110\" data-end=\"4384\">\n<p data-start=\"4112\" data-end=\"4384\">\u201cIt\u2019s a critical test case,\u201d explains <strong data-start=\"4150\" data-end=\"4170\">Jauad El Kharraz<\/strong>, executive director of the <strong data-start=\"4198\" data-end=\"4246\">Water-Energy-Climate Experts Network (WECEN)<\/strong>. \u201cProjects like <strong data-start=\"4263\" data-end=\"4274\">TERAMED<\/strong>, which targets one terawatt of Mediterranean renewables by 2030, show what regional cooperation can achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"4386\" data-end=\"4389\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"4391\" data-end=\"4427\"><strong data-start=\"4394\" data-end=\"4427\">Diverging national strategies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4428\" data-end=\"4832\">Each North African country is charting its own path. <strong data-start=\"4481\" data-end=\"4492\">Morocco<\/strong>, long regarded as a clean-energy leader, aims for <strong data-start=\"4543\" data-end=\"4577\">52% renewable capacity by 2030<\/strong> and already reached <strong data-start=\"4598\" data-end=\"4605\">38%<\/strong> by 2023. Its flagship <strong data-start=\"4628\" data-end=\"4661\">Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex<\/strong>, the world\u2019s largest concentrated solar plant, powers more than a million homes. Wind projects exceeding <strong data-start=\"4767\" data-end=\"4777\">2.3 GW<\/strong> are online, with another <strong data-start=\"4803\" data-end=\"4813\">2.6 GW<\/strong> under development.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4834\" data-end=\"5079\">\n<p data-start=\"4836\" data-end=\"5079\">\u201cMorocco\u2019s success shows how political will, clear targets, and strong partnerships can accelerate the transition,\u201d says El Kharraz. \u201cFlagship projects attract capital; public-private partnerships and regional cooperation help scale ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5081\" data-end=\"5381\">By contrast, <strong data-start=\"5094\" data-end=\"5105\">Algeria<\/strong> remains tethered to hydrocarbons, with renewables supplying barely <strong data-start=\"5173\" data-end=\"5179\">1%<\/strong> of its electricity despite enormous solar potential and a stated goal of 22 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. <strong data-start=\"5290\" data-end=\"5301\">Tunisia<\/strong> has set a 30% renewable target but continues to rely heavily on imported gas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5383\" data-end=\"5762\"><strong data-start=\"5383\" data-end=\"5392\">Egypt<\/strong> sits between these extremes \u2014 ambitious but uneven. Its <strong data-start=\"5449\" data-end=\"5470\">Benban Solar Park<\/strong> (1.8 GW) is among the world\u2019s largest, and the <strong data-start=\"5518\" data-end=\"5546\">El-Dabaa nuclear project<\/strong> represents a broader diversification push. With strong wind potential along the Gulf of Suez, Egypt could become a <strong data-start=\"5662\" data-end=\"5684\">regional power hub<\/strong>. But grid constraints, policy uncertainty, and funding gaps remain obstacles.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5764\" data-end=\"5925\">\n<p data-start=\"5766\" data-end=\"5925\">\u201cEgypt\u2019s challenge is maintaining policy consistency and mobilising private investment,\u201d says AUC\u2019s Khlaifat. \u201cProgress is visible, but the pace must quicken.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"5927\" data-end=\"5930\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"5932\" data-end=\"5970\"><strong data-start=\"5935\" data-end=\"5970\">From vulnerability to advantage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5971\" data-end=\"6274\">The IEA argues that the region\u2019s looming demand surge should be viewed as a <strong data-start=\"6047\" data-end=\"6078\">call to innovate, not panic<\/strong>. With vast solar and wind resources, emerging green-hydrogen projects, and new interconnection plans, North Africa can meet its own needs while becoming a hub for cross-continental power trade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6276\" data-end=\"6593\">The <strong data-start=\"6280\" data-end=\"6328\">Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI)<\/strong> calls EU-North Africa partnerships a \u201cwin-win\u201d for <strong data-start=\"6380\" data-end=\"6428\">energy security, investment, and development<\/strong>, while the <strong data-start=\"6440\" data-end=\"6488\">African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)<\/strong> could facilitate new <strong data-start=\"6510\" data-end=\"6542\">south-south energy corridors<\/strong>, connecting Morocco to West Africa via Mauritania.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6595\" data-end=\"6678\">Still, experts urge caution against prioritising exports over domestic stability.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6680\" data-end=\"6897\">\n<p data-start=\"6682\" data-end=\"6897\">\u201cIt\u2019s premature to talk about large-scale power exports when local industries remain underdeveloped and households face shortages,\u201d warns Saffar. \u201cEnsuring reliable, affordable domestic electricity must come first.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"6899\" data-end=\"7149\">With youth unemployment above <strong data-start=\"6929\" data-end=\"6936\">22%<\/strong>, reliable power is not just an energy issue \u2014 it\u2019s an economic one. Expanding access to clean, affordable electricity will be crucial for attracting manufacturing, enabling industrial growth, and creating jobs.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7151\" data-end=\"7350\">\n<p data-start=\"7153\" data-end=\"7350\">\u201cCommodity exports alone won\u2019t generate enough value,\u201d Saffar adds. \u201cThe real opportunity lies in using renewable energy to build low-carbon industries that keep wealth and jobs within the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"7352\" data-end=\"7355\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"7357\" data-end=\"7387\"><strong data-start=\"7360\" data-end=\"7387\">A defining decade ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7388\" data-end=\"7626\">As North Africa races to meet surging energy demand, it stands at a pivotal moment. Managed wisely, the coming decade could transform the region from a fossil-fuel supplier into a <strong data-start=\"7568\" data-end=\"7623\">global model for clean, inclusive industrialisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7628\" data-end=\"7800\">The challenge is not whether North Africa can produce enough renewable power \u2014 it\u2019s whether it can <strong data-start=\"7727\" data-end=\"7774\">harness that energy to power its own future<\/strong> before sending it abroad.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As record heat waves and worsening water scarcity strain the region, experts are warning that North Africa must rapidly diversify its energy mix to avoid deepening dependence on fossil fuels and economic vulnerability.
