Retail trading volumes on the <strong data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1146\">Nigerian Exchange<\/strong> soared by <strong data-start=\"1157\" data-end=\"1187\">88% month-on-month in July<\/strong>, reaching <strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1231\">\u20a6516.5 billion ($351 million)<\/strong> \u2014 nearly one-third of all trades that month. While institutional investors still dominate, fintechs are credited with driving a steady influx of new retail buyers through seamless mobile platforms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1759\">Traditional brokerage accounts once required minimum balances of up to <strong data-start=\"1504\" data-end=\"1516\">\u20a6500,000<\/strong>, but fintech apps have reduced that threshold to <strong data-start=\"1566\" data-end=\"1576\">\u20a61,000<\/strong>. This shift has been supported by the new <strong data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1652\">Investment and Securities Act<\/strong>, which replaced a 2007 framework and clarified the regulatory environment for online and digital assets.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1807\"><strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1807\">\u201cYouthful, dynamic, and decentralised\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"1904\">Nigeria\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"1862\">Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)<\/strong> calls this digital evolution essential.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"2147\">\n<p data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"2147\">\u201cThe Nigerian economy is youthful, dynamic, and increasingly decentralised,\u201d said SEC Director-General <strong data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2029\">Emomotimi Agama<\/strong>. \u201cWith nearly three-quarters of the population under 24, we must engage them through the technology they understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2149\" data-end=\"2564\">Platforms like <strong data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2177\">PiggyVest<\/strong>, boasting more than <strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2217\">4 million users<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2223\" data-end=\"2236\">Cowrywise<\/strong>, with over <strong data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2259\">800,000<\/strong>, are expanding beyond savings into equities, mutual funds, and fixed-income investments. Trove and Bamboo have gone further by enabling <strong data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2420\">fractional ownership<\/strong> of both Nigerian and global stocks, while RiseVest focuses on <strong data-start=\"2483\" data-end=\"2512\">dollar-denominated assets<\/strong> as a hedge against inflation and naira devaluation.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2619\"><strong data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2619\">A financial safety net for a volatile economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2854\">For many Nigerians, the appeal lies in diversification and protection against local currency shocks.<br data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2723\" \/>After two major devaluations in 2016 and 2023, foreign-denominated investments have become a refuge for savers seeking stability.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2856\" data-end=\"3096\">\n<p data-start=\"2858\" data-end=\"3096\">\u201cThat was when I decided to diversify,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"2903\" data-end=\"2923\">Tekena Gbalafuma<\/strong>, a 29-year-old engineer who lost his postgraduate savings in the 2016 naira crash. \u201cNow I invest in both Nigerian and international assets \u2014 it gives my portfolio balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3425\">In 2024, the <strong data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3148\">Nigerian Exchange All-Share Index<\/strong> gained <strong data-start=\"3156\" data-end=\"3165\">37.7%<\/strong>, followed by another <strong data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3201\">38.7% rise<\/strong> in the first nine months of 2025 \u2014 largely driven by domestic investors. Treasury bill yields have climbed above <strong data-start=\"3315\" data-end=\"3322\">24%<\/strong>, and commercial paper returns surpassed <strong data-start=\"3363\" data-end=\"3370\">30%<\/strong>, reflecting high interest rates and investor appetite.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3465\"><strong data-start=\"3431\" data-end=\"3465\">Regulators adapt to innovation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3466\" data-end=\"3734\">The SEC has responded by launching <strong data-start=\"3501\" data-end=\"3512\">FinPort<\/strong>, a digital interface to engage fintechs and streamline compliance. Similarly, the <strong data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3640\">Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS)<\/strong> has created a <strong data-start=\"3655\" data-end=\"3675\">custodian portal<\/strong> to enhance transparency in tracking digital investments.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3736\" data-end=\"3901\">\n<p data-start=\"3738\" data-end=\"3901\">\u201cDigital transformation remains at the core of our strategy,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"3805\" data-end=\"3836\">CSCS CEO Haruna Jalo-Waziri<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re evolving to match users\u2019 needs and industry innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"3903\" data-end=\"3951\"><strong data-start=\"3907\" data-end=\"3951\">Investors bet on Nigeria\u2019s next unicorns<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3952\" data-end=\"4237\">The fintech boom has also caught the attention of venture capital.<br data-start=\"4018\" data-end=\"4021\" \/>Following landmark successes such as <strong data-start=\"4058\" data-end=\"4073\">Flutterwave<\/strong> (valued at over <strong data-start=\"4090\" data-end=\"4104\">$2 billion<\/strong>) and <strong data-start=\"4110\" data-end=\"4122\">Paystack<\/strong> (acquired by Stripe for <strong data-start=\"4147\" data-end=\"4163\">$200 million<\/strong>), investors are backing Nigeria\u2019s next generation of wealth-tech firms.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4239\" data-end=\"4578\">\n<li data-start=\"4239\" data-end=\"4335\">\n<p data-start=\"4241\" data-end=\"4335\"><strong data-start=\"4241\" data-end=\"4251\">Bamboo<\/strong> has raised <strong data-start=\"4263\" data-end=\"4278\">$15 million<\/strong>, led by U.S. firms <strong data-start=\"4298\" data-end=\"4311\">Greycroft<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4316\" data-end=\"4332\">Tiger Global<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4336\" data-end=\"4418\">\n<p data-start=\"4338\" data-end=\"4418\"><strong data-start=\"4338\" data-end=\"4351\">Cowrywise<\/strong> counts <strong data-start=\"4359\" data-end=\"4376\">Quona Capital<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4381\" data-end=\"4397\">Y Combinator<\/strong> among its backers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4419\" data-end=\"4578\">\n<p data-start=\"4421\" data-end=\"4578\"><strong data-start=\"4421\" data-end=\"4434\">PiggyVest<\/strong> has received funding from <strong data-start=\"4461\" data-end=\"4474\">VFD Group<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4479\" data-end=\"4494\">Flutterwave<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"4502\" data-end=\"4511\">Trove<\/strong> emerged from <strong data-start=\"4525\" data-end=\"4566\">Asset Resource Management\u2019s incubator<\/strong> in Lagos.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4580\" data-end=\"4764\">Several platforms, including <strong data-start=\"4609\" data-end=\"4619\">Bamboo<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4624\" data-end=\"4633\">Chaka<\/strong>, have begun expanding beyond Nigeria, targeting other African markets under the banner of <strong data-start=\"4724\" data-end=\"4764\">\u201cbuilding real wealth for Africans.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4766\" data-end=\"4769\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4771\" data-end=\"4799\"><strong data-start=\"4775\" data-end=\"4799\">A generational shift<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4800\" data-end=\"4991\">The rise of Nigeria\u2019s fintech-driven investing ecosystem marks a deeper cultural transformation: one where wealth creation is no longer limited to corporate elites or institutional players.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4993\" data-end=\"5158\">Through digital access, micro-investments, and global connectivity, <strong data-start=\"5061\" data-end=\"5158\">Gen Z Nigerians are not just participants \u2014 they are reshaping the future of African finance.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0A new generation of Nigerian fintech startups is transforming how young people engage with the financial markets, democratizing access to investments once reserved for the wealthy elite.
