The company confirmed on October 30 that its prototype satellite had successfully powered up its onboard Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) and generated its first AI response from space.

The experiment involved Google’s Gemma 4 AI model, which was prompted by engineers on Earth to write a short poem about being in space. The satellite processed the request using its onboard hardware and transmitted the response back to Earth.

The resulting haiku read:

Blue marble below
Data streams in silent grace
Starlight feeds my core.

Google also tested other prompts, including space-themed limericks and requests for information about the satellite’s operating conditions.

Launched on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the prototype was developed in partnership with satellite company Planet. It carries four Google TPUs, although power limitations currently mean that only one processor can operate at a time.

The successful test is an early step towards Google’s longer-term vision of interconnected satellites capable of handling more demanding AI workloads in orbit. The company believes space-based computing could eventually take advantage of near-constant sunlight to generate solar power for large-scale computing infrastructure.

However, significant engineering challenges remain. Google is now testing how its processors withstand radiation, extreme temperatures and the difficulty of cooling powerful chips in the vacuum of space.

The company’s next major milestone is planned for 2027, when it hopes to launch two interconnected satellites to test high-speed communication between orbital computing systems.

While the experiment is still in its early stages, Google’s achievement offers a glimpse into a possible future where artificial intelligence infrastructure could operate beyond traditional data centres on Earth.

Google has successfully run an artificial intelligence model aboard a satellite in orbit, marking a significant milestone in its ambition to build data centres in space.
