Binance confirmed the incident in a security update released on October 30, describing it as a complex attack involving several points of breach.

Initial investigations suggested that attackers may have gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, allowing them to access internal systems and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. However, further investigations uncovered additional security vulnerabilities. Binance has also stated that there is currently no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.

In response, Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals while carrying out security checks and working with law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms and cryptocurrency partners to trace and recover the stolen assets.

The recovery effort has already resulted in approximately $3 billion worth of affected assets being frozen on-chain, with major stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle among the companies involved in freezing funds connected to the incident.

Despite the scale of the breach, Binance has assured customers that they will not bear the financial losses. The exchange says it has set aside more than $6.34 billion in company funds to cover the impact, including approximately $5 billion already held in the affected cryptocurrencies. It is working to acquire the remaining assets.

The incident has also raised fresh concerns about cybersecurity across the cryptocurrency industry, particularly the risks associated with centralized exchanges holding large amounts of digital assets.

Blockchain intelligence firms have pointed to similarities between the attack and previous cryptocurrency thefts linked to North Korean hacking groups, although Binance has not officially attributed responsibility to any particular group.

Binance says it is working to restore withdrawal services in phases following additional security reviews. The company has also promised an updated Proof of Reserves report and a detailed technical post-mortem explaining how the breach occurred.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the incident expected to have wider implications for cryptocurrency security, exchange accountability and investor confidence.

Binance , the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has suffered a major security breach involving approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency assets, potentially making it the largest crypto theft in history.
