John Legend is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2027 Music Matters Awards Gala, recognizing his contributions to music, education and philanthropy.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation announced the honor on October 27, with the ceremony scheduled for May 21, 2027, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Beverly Hills, California. The event will bring together artists, music industry executives, educators and supporters to celebrate Legend’s career while raising funds to expand access to music education.

The gala will feature a red carpet, dinner, award presentations and musical tributes to the singer. Additional performers, presenters and honorees are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Beyond celebrating his musical achievements, the event will highlight Legend’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people and underserved communities. Proceeds will support instrument grants and music education programmes for schools and nonprofit organisations across the United States. Legend will also help provide an instrument grant to a selected school or nonprofit as part of the initiative.

“I’m deeply honored to be recognized by the Guitar Center Music Foundation and support its commitment to expanding access to music education for the next generation,” Legend said in a statement.

The recognition adds to an already remarkable career for the singer, songwriter and pianist. Legend is an EGOT winner, having earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. He has also used his platform to support social causes, founding FREEAMERICA in 2015 to address mass incarceration and launching HUMANLEVEL in 2021 to invest in community-driven solutions.

The announcement comes shortly after Legend released MUSE, his new album produced entirely by Pharrell Williams, on October 23, 2026.

With the 2027 Music Matters Awards Gala set to celebrate both his artistic legacy and his work beyond music, Legend’s upcoming honour reflects the lasting impact of his career and his continued support for music education.
