Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated singer behind classics including \u201cRock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)\u201d and \u201cYou Are My Lady,\u201d has died at the age of 70.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson died on Monday, October 5, just three days after celebrating his 70th birthday. His family confirmed his passing through a statement shared on his official Instagram account on October 6. A cause of death was not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRock Me Tonight\u201d and \u201cYou Are My Lady\u201d helped establish Jackson as one of the most recognizable voices in 1980s R&amp;B. His smooth delivery and emotionally driven performances made him a staple of the era\u2019s romantic and quiet-storm sound.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Jackson began singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church before moving into the New York club scene. He later performed with the funk group Mystic Merlin before launching his solo career.<\/p>\n<p>His breakthrough came in 1985 with his debut album, Rock Me Tonight. The album was certified platinum and produced two major R&amp;B hits. Its title track spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard\u2019s R&amp;B chart, while \u201cYou Are My Lady\u201d also reached the top of the chart and became one of Jackson\u2019s signature songs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou Are My Lady\u201d also earned Jackson a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&amp;B Vocal Performance, while he was simultaneously nominated for Best New Artist at the 1986 Grammy Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson followed his debut with Just Like the First Time in 1986, another platinum album that produced several R&amp;B No. 1s, including \u201cTasty Love,\u201d \u201cHave You Ever Loved Somebody\u201d and \u201cJam Tonight.\u201d Across his career, he accumulated 10 No. 1 R&amp;B singles, cementing his place among the genre\u2019s most successful male vocalists of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>His music continued to influence generations beyond his peak commercial years, with his catalog later finding new audiences through sampling and reinterpretations in hip-hop and contemporary R&amp;B.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Jackson publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and said he wanted to use his experience to raise awareness about the condition. However, his family did not identify the disease as the cause of his death.<\/p>\n<p>Following his death, Jackson\u2019s family described him as a kind and generous person who loved his fans, family, friends and music.
