The 2026 anniversary also marks 27 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy, following the return to democratic rule in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960, with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becoming the country\u2019s first Prime Minister. Three years later, Nigeria became a republic, with Nnamdi Azikiwe serving as its first President.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades, the country has experienced significant political, economic and social changes, including periods of military rule, the Nigerian Civil War and, eventually, the restoration of democracy in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>For the Federal Government, this year\u2019s celebration is being observed on a low-key basis, with the anniversary programme including religious services, a public lecture and a nationwide broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.<\/p>\n<p>President Tinubu is scheduled to address Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. today as part of the Independence Day activities.<\/p>\n<p>The anniversary also provides an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria\u2019s cultural influence beyond its borders.
