Nearly three decades after the death of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury has found Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the rapper\u2019s 1996 killing.<\/p>\n
The 63-year-old former South Side Compton Crips leader was convicted on Monday, August 31, 2026, marking the first conviction in the nearly 30-year-old Tupac Shakur murder case. The jury reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation following an 11-day trial.<\/p>\n
Nearly 30 Years of Mystery<\/p>\n
Tupac Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while sitting in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n
A white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle at a red light and opened fire. Shakur was struck multiple times and died from his injuries six days later at the age of 25. Knight survived the shooting.<\/p>\n
For decades, the murder remained one of the most infamous unsolved cases in music history, generating countless theories and speculation among fans.<\/p>\n
Davis Was Accused of Orchestrating the Attack<\/p>\n
Prosecutors argued that Davis was the organiser and \u201cshot caller\u201d behind the attack.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecution, the motive stemmed from an earlier confrontation that night in which Shakur and members of his entourage assaulted Davis\u2019 nephew, Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson, during a fight at the MGM Grand.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors alleged that Davis subsequently helped organise the retaliation, obtained the firearm and directed the younger men in the Cadillac to carry out the attack.<\/p>\n
Importantly, Davis was not accused of being the person who pulled the trigger. Prosecutors argued that under Nevada law, his role in organising and participating in the murder was sufficient to establish criminal responsibility.<\/p>\n
Davis\u2019 Own Words Became Key Evidence<\/p>\n
One of the most significant elements of the prosecution\u2019s case was Davis\u2019 own history of speaking publicly about the shooting.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors used statements from interviews, recordings and Davis\u2019 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, in which he discussed his involvement in the events surrounding Shakur\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
The prosecution argued that Davis had repeatedly acknowledged his role and that his statements were evidence of his responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n
Davis\u2019 defence, however, argued that his public accounts were exaggerated stories designed to generate attention and money. His lawyers also highlighted the lack of physical evidence directly connecting him to the shooting.<\/p>\n
