The move comes as AI-generated music and entirely synthetic artist identities become increasingly common across streaming services.

Spotify says the initiative is specifically focused on artist identity, rather than simply determining whether AI was used somewhere in the creation of a song. This means a real musician who uses AI as part of their creative process can still qualify for Spotify’s verification, provided they authentically represent themselves as a real artist.

Under the new system, artists will be able to voluntarily identify themselves as AI Personas. Spotify will also use a combination of human review and AI-powered tools to identify profiles that appear to represent entirely or substantially AI-generated identities. Some profiles may receive a “Likely AI Persona” designation following Spotify’s review process.

One of the biggest implications is discoverability. Spotify says music from AI Personas will not be included in editorial or algorithmic recommendations by default. This means AI-generated artist profiles will generally be excluded from recommendation surfaces such as personalized discovery unless a listener specifically follows the artist.

The move builds on Spotify’s earlier “Verified by Spotify” initiative, launched in April 2026. That badge is designed to provide listeners with a signal that an artist profile has met Spotify’s standards for authenticity and trust. Spotify says profiles that primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification.

Spotify already has a separate AI Credits system that allows artists to disclose when AI was used for elements such as vocals, lyrics, instrumentation or production. However, those credits are designed to show how AI contributed to a particular song, rather than indicate that the entire artist or track is AI-generated.

The new AI Persona system therefore represents a broader attempt by Spotify to address a growing concern in the streaming industry: listeners encountering artist profiles that appear to represent real people when, in reality, they are entirely synthetic creations.

The timing comes as streaming platforms face an explosion of AI-generated music. Spotify has said it removed 75 million spam tracks over the previous year, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing platforms attempting to separate legitimate releases from mass-produced or deceptive content.

For artists, distributors and music marketers, the development could have significant implications. Spotify’s decision to keep AI Personas outside its recommendation systems by default means that artist identity, transparency and verification could become increasingly important factors in digital music discovery.

With the rollout beginning in September, Spotify is effectively moving toward a clearer distinction between human artists, AI-assisted creators and fully synthetic artist personas, a distinction that could become increasingly important as artificial intelligence continues to reshape the music business.

Spotify is set to introduce a new “AI Persona” label that will help listeners distinguish between artists who are genuine human performers and artist profiles whose identities are generated or significantly created using artificial intelligence.
