The Neptunes<\/strong> \u2013 two-thirds of the group N.E.R.D.<\/strong> and masterminds behind megahits like Britney Spears\u2019 \u2018Slave 4 U,\u2019<\/strong>Nelly<\/strong>\u2018s \u2018Hot in Herre,\u2019 Gwen<\/strong> Stefani<\/strong>\u2018s\u2018Hollaback Girl,\u2019<\/strong> and countless other hits from the 2000s \u00a0shocked fans and music lovers alike when they announced their breakup. And, if a recent lawsuit lifted by member Chad Hugo<\/strong> is to judge by, the split was far from amicable.<\/p>\n

Legal docs obtained by Billboard reveal Hugo has slammed longtime friend and former business partner Williams with a lawsuit alleging the \u2018Happy<\/strong>\u2018 hitmaker cut him out of their company and still owes him a large sum of revenue from music they created together.<\/p>\n

Filed Friday (January 23<\/strong>), the suit claims Chad was the victim of several \u201cwrongdoings\u201d at the hands of Pharrell.<\/div>\n

\u201cWilliams engaged in self-dealing, concealed material information, and \u2026 diverted revenues owed to plaintiff,<\/em>\u201d wrote Hugo\u2019s attorney, Brent J. Lehman<\/strong>. \u201cSuch willful, fraudulent, and malicious conduct warrants the imposition of punitive damages.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

According to Hugo\u2019s legal counsel, the producer hasn\u2019t seen revenue from N.E.R.D merchandising since 2023 and believes he\u2019s owed at least $1 million of withheld royalties.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter years of obfuscation by Pharrell and his team, Mr. Hugo had no choice but to seek substantial compensation and accountability in court,\u201d<\/em> said Lehman. \u201cWe look forward to presenting the evidence and obtaining the full relief the law provides.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The new suit is the second in as many years filed by Chad against Pharrell on the basis of \u201cfraud.\u201d Back in 2024, Hugo accused his former bandmate of \u201cfraudulently\u201d seeking sole control over the \u201cNeptunes\u201d name.<\/p>\n

As far as the legal docs filed Friday, however, Williams has not made a public statement on the matter as of the time of this report.<\/div>\n
