Mariah Carey has added another major milestone to her legendary catalogue, as her 2009 hit “Obsessed” officially surpasses 1 billion streams on Spotify.

The achievement makes the song her second track to enter Spotify’s Billion Streams Club, joining her festive classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has accumulated more than 2.5 billion streams on the platform.

Released in June 2009 as the lead single from her twelfth studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, “Obsessed” became one of the standout records of that era. The track peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of Carey’s most recognisable releases.

Nearly 17 years after its release, the song continues to find new audiences, thanks in part to its renewed popularity on TikTok. Its memorable hook, particularly the line “Why you so obsessed with me?”, has become a popular sound for memes, lip-sync videos and online trends.

The streaming milestone also highlights the longevity of Carey’s music beyond the seasonal success of her Christmas catalogue. While “All I Want for Christmas Is You” remains one of the biggest holiday records globally, “Obsessed” demonstrates the continued appeal of her non-holiday hits.

Carey could soon have another song joining the billion-stream club. Her 2005 hit “We Belong Together” is also approaching the milestone, with less than five million streams separating it from the mark as of November 5.

With “Obsessed” now crossing the billion-stream threshold, Mariah Carey continues to demonstrate the lasting streaming power of her catalogue across generations.
