R&B has lost one of its defining voices. Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated singer behind classics including โ€œRock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)โ€ and โ€œYou Are My Lady,โ€ has died at the age of 70.

Jackson died on Monday, October 5, just three days after celebrating his 70th birthday. His family confirmed his passing through a statement shared on his official Instagram account on October 6. A cause of death was not disclosed.

โ€œRock Me Tonightโ€ and โ€œYou Are My Ladyโ€ helped establish Jackson as one of the most recognizable voices in 1980s R&B. His smooth delivery and emotionally driven performances made him a staple of the eraโ€™s romantic and quiet-storm sound.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Jackson began singing gospel at White Rock Baptist Church before moving into the New York club scene. He later performed with the funk group Mystic Merlin before launching his solo career.

His breakthrough came in 1985 with his debut album, Rock Me Tonight. The album was certified platinum and produced two major R&B hits. Its title track spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboardโ€™s R&B chart, while โ€œYou Are My Ladyโ€ also reached the top of the chart and became one of Jacksonโ€™s signature songs.

โ€œYou Are My Ladyโ€ also earned Jackson a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, while he was simultaneously nominated for Best New Artist at the 1986 Grammy Awards.

Jackson followed his debut with Just Like the First Time in 1986, another platinum album that produced several R&B No. 1s, including โ€œTasty Love,โ€ โ€œHave You Ever Loved Somebodyโ€ and โ€œJam Tonight.โ€ Across his career, he accumulated 10 No. 1 R&B singles, cementing his place among the genreโ€™s most successful male vocalists of the decade.

His music continued to influence generations beyond his peak commercial years, with his catalog later finding new audiences through sampling and reinterpretations in hip-hop and contemporary R&B.

In 2024, Jackson publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and said he wanted to use his experience to raise awareness about the condition. However, his family did not identify the disease as the cause of his death.

Following his death, Jacksonโ€™s family described him as a kind and generous person who loved his fans, family, friends and music. They said his songs had become part of the soundtrack to peopleโ€™s love stories and celebrations.

Freddie Jackson leaves behind a catalog that helped define romantic R&B in the 1980s and a voice that remains instantly recognizable decades after his biggest hits first reached audiences.
