Hip-hop legend and renowned producer Dr. Dre has revealed that he is actively using artificial intelligence in the studio, becoming one of the most prominent music producers to publicly embrace the technology.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Dre discussed the growing role of AI in music alongside his longtime business partner and Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine.
Dre said he does not view AI as a threat to music or creativity. Instead, he considers it another technological tool that producers can use to explore new ideas.
“I don’t see it as a threat. I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.”
Dre compared the current backlash against AI to resistance faced by previous technological innovations in music, including drum machines and synthesizers. He argued that artists should be willing to learn and experiment with new technology rather than automatically reject it.
The producer explained that his own use of AI involves taking music he has already created and experimenting with what the technology can do with it. He described himself as fully open to exploring the possibilities, saying he is “embracing it” and is excited to see where the technology goes.
Iovine, who has worked alongside Dre for decades, also expressed strong support for AI-assisted music creation. He argued that while AI will inevitably produce some poor music, the music industry already produces plenty of bad music without the technology.
Dre’s comments arrive at a pivotal moment for the music industry, as artists, labels and technology companies continue debating copyright, ownership, consent and compensation in AI-generated music.
The producer’s position is particularly notable given his status as one of hip-hop’s most influential architects. From his work with N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 2Pac and Kendrick Lamar to his development of the signature Aftermath sound, Dre has repeatedly embraced new production technologies throughout his career.
His willingness to experiment with AI therefore represents another technological shift for a producer who has consistently incorporated new tools into his creative process.
Dre’s comments also highlight an emerging distinction in the AI debate: using AI as a creative tool versus allowing AI to replace human creativity entirely.
For Dre, the technology appears to fall firmly into the first category.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into music production, one of hip-hop’s most influential producers is making his position clear: he isn’t running from AI, he he’s experimenting with it.
