Veteran actor Michael Wright, best known for his unforgettable role as Eddie King Jr. in The Five Heartbeats and his appearance in Sugar Hill, has died at the age of 70.
Wright died on August 19, 2026, in Los Angeles, according to his family. His wife, Susan Wright, announced his passing in a statement shared on August 21, describing him as an โextraordinary artistโ whose work touched generations.
According to the familyโs statement to TMZ, Wright died after suffering heart failure along with complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition.
Born on April 30, 1956, in New York City, Wright began his acting career in the late 1970s, making his screen debut in the 1979 film The Wanderers. He went on to build a career spanning nearly five decades and more than 50 film and television appearances.
His breakthrough came with the 1980s science-fiction franchise V, where he played Elias Taylor. He later appeared in films including Streamers, The Principal, Sugar Hill, Money Talks, Point Blank and The Interpreter.
However, Wrightโs most beloved performance came in Robert Townsendโs 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats. He portrayed Eddie King Jr., the charismatic lead singer of the fictional R&B group at the centre of the film. His portrayal of a gifted performer battling addiction became one of the movieโs most memorable elements and cemented his place in Black cinema history.
Wright also had a notable television career, appearing in shows including Oz, Miami Vice, New York Undercover and Black Lightning. His final credited screen appearances included the 2019 series Black Lightning and the 2025 film Dope King.
