Hip-hop legend Nas is set to receive one of the music industry’s highest songwriting honors after Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) announced that the Grammy-winning rapper will be presented with the BMI Icon Award at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The prestigious honor recognizes Nas’ extraordinary songwriting career and his immeasurable influence on hip-hop culture over the past three decades.
The private ceremony will take place on August 26 in Los Angeles, where BMI will also celebrate the songwriters, producers, and publishers behind the year’s most-performed R&B and hip-hop songs. In addition to honoring Nas, the event will recognize winners in categories including Songwriter of the Year, Producer of the Year, Publisher of the Year, and Song of the Year.
Announcing the honor, Catherine Brewton, BMI’s Vice President of Creative in Atlanta, praised Nas for redefining hip-hop through his lyrical excellence and storytelling.
She described the rapper as “a true icon” whose influence continues to inspire generations of artists while shaping the sound and culture of hip-hop around the world.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, Nas first changed the course of hip-hop with his landmark 1994 debut album, Illmatic, a project frequently cited among the greatest albums ever made. Throughout his illustrious career, he has continued to evolve as both an artist and entrepreneur, earning multiple Grammy Awards, platinum-selling albums, and widespread critical acclaim while maintaining his reputation as one of rap’s finest lyricists.
The BMI Icon Award places Nas alongside an elite group of music legends recognized for their lasting impact on songwriting and popular culture. Previous recipients at the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards include Lil Wayne, Babyface, Janet Jackson, Patti LaBelle, and Snoop Dogg, highlighting the significance of the accolade.
