The president of the Congo Football Association and his son have been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of misappropriating more than $1.3 million in development funds provided by FIFA.

Authorities said the funds were originally allocated by FIFA to support football development programs, infrastructure, and grassroots initiatives in Republic of the Congo. Investigations revealed that the money was instead diverted for personal use through fraudulent transactions and financial manipulation.

The case has become one of the most high-profile corruption scandals in African football administration in recent years. Prosecutors argued that the misuse of the funds deprived local football programs of crucial financial support meant to nurture young talent and improve facilities across the country.

Following a lengthy investigation and trial, the court ruled that both the FA president and his son were directly responsible for the embezzlement scheme, leading to the severe life sentences.

The verdict sends a strong message about financial accountability in football governance, as global authorities including FIFA continue efforts to combat corruption and ensure development funds are used for their intended purpose.
